Prized for their pleasantly nutty flavor and delightfully chewy texture, SHILOH FARMS Whole Oat Groats are a great source of fiber and complex carbohydrates, which will leave you feeling full and energized!
With more soluble fiber than any other grain, oats have been shown to have significant heart-healthy, cholesterol-lowering properties. They are also high in protein, a host of essential minerals (especially manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc), and several B Vitamins (particularly thiamin, folate, and riboflavin). Oats are one of the primary sources of avenanthramides, a group of antioxidants thought to have anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant properties.
An especially hardy cereal crop, oats are enclosed in two tough husks that must be removed before the grain can be eaten. To make it easier to remove these two outer hulls, the oats are cleaned and briefly toasted using dry heat. This toasting also stabilizes the grain and prevents it from becoming rancid by deactivating lipase (a bitter-tasting enzyme). What remains is a whole grain groat, containing the fiber-rich bran, nutritious germ, and the endosperm, which comprises the bulk of the grain.
Because these oats have been heat treated to stabilize them, they will not germinate and therefore cannot be used for sprouting.
To Cook: Sort* and rinse. Add 1 part groats to 3 parts water and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer, stirring occassionally, for 45-60 minutes, or until grain is tender. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, 10 minutes. Presoak groats to reduce cooking time.
Suggestions:
1. Top with a little cinnamon, maple sugar, and some chopped nuts for a hearty breakfast. Or go savory with chives, bacon, and a fried egg.
2. Substitute for barley or other grains in soups, stews, and chilis.
3. Mix with fresh herbs and seasonal vegetables for delicious pilafs and salads.
4. Add pre-cooked groats to breads and other baked goods for improved nutrition and added texture and flavor.
5. Grind into a flour to be used in baked goods; oat flour is an especially good alternative for gluten free baking.
6. Give substance and texture to meatloaf, meatballs, hamburgers, and veggie patties.
Storage: To maximize shelf life, store groats in a cool, dry place out of sunlight, ideally in a glass jar or airtight container. Groats can also be frozen for long-term storage.

I began ordering and cooking oat groats about two years ago. I am so happy to have found them at Shiloh Farms. I have also purchased the beans and rices from Shiloh Farms. Terrific products.

I purchase oat groats for the seed mix my budgie eats and he always dives into eating these right away! You can smell how fresh the groats are and there's practically no dust at the bottom of the bag, just full groats. Well done, Shiloh Farms, keep it up!

I was happy to get certified organic groats. The product itself is great and cooks well in my pressure cooker. My issue is with the packaging. When I ordered 5 lbs., I expected a single package. Instead I got a lot more plastic packaging and an elimination of my objective in ordering directly from you. I can get the same thing from Amazon, faster. So I will not be ordering direct from Shiloh, unless/until there is a way to get a single plastic bag or other packaging to help me limit my plastic use.
