SHILOH FARMS Coarse Wheat Bran is an easy and convenient way of adding important dietary fiber (approximately 80% insoluble and 20% soluble) to your diet. Packed with nutrition, it is also a good source of protein, iron, and B Vitamins.
The multilayered outer coating of the whole wheat kernel, our bran has not been heated, steamed, cooked, or altered in any way. It is a byproduct of the milling process used to transform wheat into flour; as such, it is also frequently called Miller's Bran.
Soaking bran in warm water overnight at room temperature helps to deactivate phytates in the bran that may hinder absorption of minerals in the digestive tract.
To Toast in Oven: Preheat oven to 350 F. Evenly spread ½ cup of wheat bran on a rimmed baking sheet or casserole dish. Shake pan to spread the bran evenly in a thin layer. Bake 3-5 minutes, watching for bran to start darkening. For more even toasting, shake pan again and toast for 2 more minutes.
Suggestions:
1. Sprinkle toasted wheat bran over cereal, yogurt, applesauce or fruit.
2. Replace 1/4 cup of flour with 1/4 cup coarse bran in breads, muffins, or other baked goods.
3. Add 1/4 cup bran to cooked cereals, soups, gravy, mashed potatoes, meatloaf, or casseroles.
4. Add to pancake, waffle, and brownie batters.
5. Add toasted bran to shakes or smoothies.
